Benefits of Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Continuity: You won’t be without teeth or a smile during the healing process.
  • Protection: Dentures help control swelling and protect healing tissues from irritation.
  • Functionality: You can begin eating soft foods and resume normal activities sooner.

Limitations of Immdediate Dentures

While immediate dentures do have their benefits, there are also considerations and limitations to keep in mind:

Esthetics and Bite Changes:

  • As you still have your natural teeth;
    • You are not able to try-in the waxed version of your denture to see how your new smile will look before completion
    • We are unable to confirm how the denture will fit together with your bite and jaw position prior to final placement

During the Initial Healing Phase:

  • To compensate for the existing height of the bone;
    • Immediately after the teeth have been removed more of the pink denture base will be visible
    • The height of the teeth will need to be very small
    • The thickness of denture base will need to be quite thin
    • Denture might not fit well due to the estimation of the extraction sites

Follow-up adjustments:

  • Adjustment appointments will be necessary over the first 6 months as your gums and bone heal and shrink.
    • Adjustments and/or refitting the denture with a temporary liner generally are required after 2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months during the healing process.
  • At around twelve months when bone shrinking has slowed a rebase/refitting is required to remove the temporary liner and replace it with permanent material.

Recommended Treatment Plan

Due to the limitations of an immediate denture and to attain the optimal esthetics that you envision, our recommendation is to place a transitional denture right after your extractions. The advantage of a transitional is that it can be used as a “training wheel” denture. It looks and feels like a regular denture and will require the same adjustments and refitting over the course of healing but at around the 12 month mark, a new final denture will be made. At this stage you will be able to request changes such as size, shape and, shade of teeth.
